I am Rūta Simutytė, a textile sculptor and educator dedicated to creating unique, illuminated design objects that blur the line between art and functional lighting. Inspired by the warmth of Danish hygge and the organic imperfection of Japanese wabi-sabi, my work focuses on textiles as a core medium. The tactile essence of fabric naturally brings warmth, unique aesthetics, and a soothing psychological comfort into human spaces.
Nature and light are essential to our emotional well-being. My practice is driven by a desire to capture the profound experience of being immersed in nature and translate that ambient mood into architectural interiors and exterior spaces. Rather than replicating the natural world, I interpret it through the imagery of memory. Each piece is organic and handcrafted—some objects evoking frozen icebergs, others forest moss, and some underwater corals. This is my interpretation of a surreal, otherworldly domain, designed to create a cozy, relaxing, and (super)natural atmosphere.
Beyond showcasing my sculptures in art exhibitions and light festivals, I extend this creative journey to others through hands-on educational workshops. Currently, I host botanical textile frottage sessions, where participants capture the unique, intricate patterns of nature directly onto fabric. This process serves as a sustainable way to upcycle garments – breathing second life into old clothing by artistically concealing stains or fading with natural plant prints. Looking ahead, my vision is expanding to include artistic light-making workshops, inviting others to shape their own luminous sculptures.
Whether through an exhibition piece, a large-scale festival installation, or an intimate workshop, my goal remains the same: to foster a deep emotional connection with nature and inspire mindful, creative expression.
